ANSA's Executive Director Sharon Gelman said, "Archbishop Tutu is one of the great heroes of our time and he has been an extraordinary friend and invaluable advisor to ANSA over the years. His wisdom, integrity, love, and bravery have had a profound influence on us, and his irrepressible sense of humor -- even in the face of the most difficult situations -- reminds us to keep life in perspective. We're deeply honored to host his U.S. birthday celebration and grateful to everyone who has joined with ANSA to make this event possible and meaningful."
Established in 1989 to support the struggle against apartheid, ANSA is a non-profit organization working in the U.S. and South Africa to combat HIV/AIDS, assist children orphaned by the disease, advance civil rights, safeguard voting rights, educate and empower youth, and build bonds between our nations. ANSA operates in partnership with effective grassroots organizations on the front lines of these issues and makes a substantial difference by: providing grants; raising public awareness; galvanizing support; building coalitions; focusing on the root causes of social problems; and developing new programs that address urgent needs. In the past 10 years alone, ANSA has raised over $8 million for South African non-profits, shipped over 70 tons of medical supplies and books to impoverished communities, successfully advocated for improved government policies, and educated millions across the U.S. and the African continent about HIV/AIDS and voting rights.
Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a legendary anti-apartheid hero who continues to be one of the world's most tireless human rights and peace activists, is the Honorary Chair of ANSA's Amandla AIDS Fund (AAF). Launched in 2003 through the generosity and commitment of longtime ANSA supporters Deborah and Carlos Santana, AAF provides funding and support for pivotal South African efforts that combat HIV/AIDS and mitigate the societal impact of the pandemic.
The event will feature a silent auction of one-of-a-kind items including: Nelson Mandela's signed limited-edition, quarter leather-bound autobiography; two original paintings of Archbishop Tutu by renowned artist Peter Max; museum quality crafts; designer jewelry and accessories; and luxury vacations to world-class international destinations.
A special online auction is also being held at http://www.charityfolks.com/ featuring once-in-a-lifetime experiences and Hollywood collectibles including: six seats at Blair Underwood's table for the event; walk-on roles on "King of Queens" and "The Shield," signed guitars from Carlos Santana and Dave Matthews; a set visit to "The George Lopez Show," and the original Armani leather coat worn by Samuel L. Jackson in "Shaft."
In addition to raising money for ANSA's work, a portion of the proceeds from "TUTU - ONE AMAZING NIGHT OF CELEBRATION" will be donated in the Archbishop's honor to two of his favorite South African charities serving children in need, Philani and Tygerberg Children's Hospital.
Updates on "TUTU - ONE AMAZING NIGHT OF CELEBRATION," ANSA's 75th birthday salute to this visionary leader, will be announced over the coming weeks.
Individual tickets to the event range from $500 to $1,000 and ticket packages range from $2,500 to $75,000. For more information on purchasing tickets or to make a contribution contact: Michael Teta Associates at (818) 906-0240 or Tutu2006@ansafrica.org.
